For some people, it may be easier to abstain from something altogether than try to use moderation!
If the first bite of something tastes best, and your pleasure gradually drops...or if having something makes you want it less, you're probably a moderator.
If that first bite makes you want more, and subsequent bites are just as or more desirable than the first....so, having something makes you want more; then you could be an abstainer!
It may be easier for you to give up something altogether (abstain from it), rather than to indulge moderately. You can exhaust your self control debating with yourself on how much you can have, does this time "Count", what are the rules around having this, if I had it yesterday can I have it today.
When you abstain, you are not tempted by things that you have determined to be off limits - if you never do it, it requires no self control to maintain the habit - zero mental effort is required to abstain.
However, if you're a moderator, trying to abstain and deny yourself can cause you to become extremely pre-occupied with indulging.
You have to learn who you are.
And just because you can moderate with one thing (a handful is chips is all you need), doesn't mean you shouldn't consider abstaining from others (does the gummy candy bag empty in your presence?)
You could also consider a short term abstinence - "Lent" Pleasure - where you give something up for a limited amount of time (like my Sugar Free March challenge!). This exercise in self control where you set an expectation and meet it can be a great boost. It can re-awaken our pleasure for something, and it can also help us see that we may be better off when we permanently drop it from our habits.
This isn't just about food either. Do you find yourself constantly on your phone playing a game? Credit card spending out of control? Then it may be a time to abstain and delete these things from your devices and start using cash instead!
When you start to pay attention to who you are as a person, you can learn so much more about who you are and what makes you tick; and then use these to your advantage!
